Rhubarb Growth

April 25, 2008

Continuing the look back in time, I thought I’d post a history of the rhubarb growth these past week.

Here is the crown on April 17th:

A close-up of one of the emerging leaves:

Here it is on April 20th with a thin layer of used coffee grinds spread around it:

Three days later on April 23rd:

And 24 hours later this morning:

It’s really popped out of the ground in the last four days! After reading more on dividing rhubarb, I think I’ll wait until October/November to divide the crown when it goes dormant. I think it would be too stressful for the plant if I was to divide now during this rapid growth period.

You’ll soon be cooking rhubarb goodies by the look of that! Nice!

I’m pretty excited about some fresh strawberry rhubarb jam! This plant is such a great producer of long, red stalks that I often have to give away to friends and neighbours! I don’t have too many rhubarb recipes, just jam, cake and pie. I should really find some good new recipes for this year’s crop.
